What is a veneer?

A veneer is like a covering for a tooth, made from a very thin layer of porcelain material, and fits over the surface a tooth much like a false nail on your hands. Veneers can also be made from a naturally coloured “composite” material, rather than porcelain.

What advantages to veneers provide?

Veneers will look just like your natural teeth, giving you a healthy and sparkling smile. Also, because they are so thin and can be held in place by a strong glue-like resin, there is very little preparation required on your natural teeth.

When might I need veneers?

Veneers can help many issues you might have with your smile. They can improve the shape, position and colour of your teeth. You can choose the appropriate shade of porcelain for a veneer, whether you are improving a singular tooth or lightening an entire row. Veneers can also improve the look of broken and chipped teeth, with a thicker covering of porcelain replacing any broken areas. They can also close small gaps between teeth, thus avoiding orthodontic treatment if it is not necessary. Teeth that are out of position can sometimes be helped with veneers, which bring it back into line with the rest of the natural teeth.

What are the alternatives?

Natural coloured fillings can be used to repair minor damage to the front of teeth, which is a great choice for where the tooth is supporting the filling. However, this option might not work for chipped tooth corners. Crowns are also an alternative, usually used when teeth require to be strengthened. Crowns work when teeth are broken or weakened due to large fillings or for teeth protection after a root canal procedure.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers can last for many years; however, they need to be cared for just as much as natural teeth. Veneers can break and chip, but they can be repaired or replaced. You will be told how long your veneers are expected to last by the dentist who fits them.

How is a tooth prepared for a veneer?

A small amount of the enamel surface of a tooth is removed so that there is room to accommodate the thickness of the veneer. This will ensure that your teeth do not look bulky after veneers are fitted. After this initial stage of preparation the dentist will take an impression mould of your teeth and send it to a dental technician. Then, using this mould and other information, the veneer is custom made to suit you. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched to the veneer to ensure a natural looking smile. In some cases a local anaesthetic injection can be used to ensure there is no discomfort during the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

Usually a veneer will take two visits to completely fit. The first stage will require the preparation of the tooth and the matching of the porcelain to the shade of your natural teeth. The second visit will complete the fitting of your custom-made veneer using a special bonding adhesive.

Will I need a temporary fitting between visits?

In most cases there is no need for a temporary fitting between visits. This is because the preparation is so minimal and the change to the tooth minor.

What happens after I’ve had my veneer fitted?

You will need to wait a while to adjust to your new veneer, as only small changes can be made to it once it is fitted. After a short period your dentist might need to check your veneer and polish it and make sure that you are generally happy with the results. Broken or chipped veneers can be replaced or repaired.
